There are more than 500 wild horses on Sable Island National Park Reserve. The horses are part of the island’s ecological community and as such are protected as wildlife by Parks Canada under the Canada National Parks Act and the National Parks of Canada Wildlife Regulations. As with other wildlife in national parks, Parks Canada does not control or actively manage the Sable Island horse population. The health and size of the horse population is monitored through collaborations with academic institutions.
